Count down to something special

Reading time: 0-5 minutes

We all get excited when we’ve got something to look forward to. And your child will love getting involved with planning an upcoming birthday or play date. They’ll get to be part of the excitement, and have the chance to count and use numbers at the same time.

Counting down to a big event games

Game #1: Save the date

Why not ask your child to help you mark the date and time of an event on a calendar. Choose a date together - it could be a birthday, the school holidays or even a play date - and with your help, your child could find the right day and month and then mark it on your calendar.

Game #2: How many sleeps?

You could mark a special event on the calendar together, then ask your child to count on the calendar how many weeks or days it is until the event. It’s a great way for them to gain confidence with counting, and also build excitement for a big day.

Game #3: Party planners

Your child will feel really important if you let them help you plan a special event. And by using the hours in the day you can also help them count - e.g. at 10am the guests will arrive… Talk about how long each activity will take - lunch is 30 minutes, games are 20 minutes. When you’re done, encourage your child to write down your party plan. Can we come too?
